Joy

Celebrating equal marriage for all

John Castagna’s JOY is choreographed for six dancers to Debussy’s “L’isle joyeuse”.  In JOY the dancers celebrate the strength of love and honor the concept of equal marriage for all.  Debussy’s score was inspired by a painting by the French artist Watteau “Pilgrimage to Cytheria”, the Greek island where Aphrodite, the goddess of love , was born, and this is reflected in the opening tableau. The premiere of this work included live music by pianist Harout Senekermian.

The costumes are designed by Anda Bernovska in various shades of flesh tones ranging from cream to chocolate.  The dancers are Hai Cohen, Arianna Gallastegui, Khilea Douglass, Jack Virga, Abby Relic, Damien Diaz.  The work was filmed at Mimoda Studio, Los Angeles.

JOY was nominated by Dance Magazine for “Video of the Month” September 2014.
